Preparing to Apply

  • If you are a current student, investigate policies and procedures at your home university around topics like travel registration, transfer credit, and financial aid. You should talk to your academic advisor or department and your global/study abroad office.

  • Review the IFR Eligibility Criteria and Application Timeline to know when to apply.
  • Compare programs to determine which best suit your academic, professional, and personal goals. Decide on your top 2-3 field schools to list in your application.

  • Discuss your plans with your support network: family, friends, professors, and mentors.

  • Apply for or renew your passport if you plan to enroll in field school outside the U.S./your home country.

Application Opening:
We begin to open applications for program sessions on the dates below. However, applications for specific programs may open later if it is awaiting permits, finalizing logistics, or needs other approvals before it is published on our site.

  • Winter Applications: June 1
  • Summer Applications: September 15

How to Apply

Phase 1: Pre-Decision

  • Once you have chosen your top 2-3 field schools, hit the link above or the “Apply Now” button on a program page.
  • Create your account and confirm your email address. 
  • Once your account is verified, login and complete all application components. 
  • Upon completing and submitting all required materials, IFR will review your application and then send it to your field school director.

Phase 2: Post-Decision

  • Once admitted to your field school of choice, you must secure your spot! Admitted students must pay a $500 non-refundable deposit to secure their spot in their program. Programs will close once they reach capacity – enrollment is secured on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Pay your program fees by the deadline indicated on your program page.
  • Complete additional program forms and requirements as requested via email.

Phase 3: Getting Ready for the Field

  • Attend your IFR general and program specific field school orientations (dates to be communicated via email).
  • As the summer nears you will get ready for the field, arranging your transportation to the program and purchasing the equipment you will need. A packing list and arrival information will be provided to all enrolled students. Your travel itinerary must be sent to the field school directors prior to your arrival to the program.
  • Then…you begin your field school journey!
