If you’re a Pell Grant recipient dreaming of archaeology fieldwork abroad, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program could help make that dream affordable. Each year, this federal study abroad scholarship helps thousands of undergraduates fund international experiences. In fact, the Gilman Program awards scholarships to roughly 1 in 4 applicants, and IFR students have a strong track record of success.

What is the Gilman Scholarship?

The Gilman Program is a U.S. Department of State scholarship that provides up to $5,000 in merit-based funding to help undergraduate students with high financial need study or intern abroad. The overall mission of the program is to help students build valuable career skills and meaningful intercultural connections that promote mutual understanding and respect.

To be eligible for Gilman funding, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be an undergraduate student receiving a Federal Pell Grant
  • Be accepted or applying to a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program

Can you use Gilman funding for archaeology field school?

Yes! Most of IFR’s international archaeology field schools and environmental field courses qualify for Gilman funding. The Gilman Scholarship looks for students whose study abroad experiences will support their academic and career goals. IFR field schools tend to stand out; they provide in-demand career training, meaningful cultural immersion, and the opportunity to contribute to real-world research that deepens cross-cultural understanding.

Tips for a strong Gilman application

  • Tell the story of you! Gilman wants to know why this experience matters to you. What drew you to your study abroad program specifically? How does this field school support your academic or career path, and importantly, how will you share what you’ve learned when you return? Be personal, thoughtful, and specific about the impact this opportunity will have on your future and your community when you return home.
  • Make sure you’ve submitted your field school application. One of the Gilman Program’s eligibility requirements is that you’ve already applied to (or been accepted to) a qualifying study abroad or internship program. Submit your IFR field school application ahead of time to make sure you’re eligible.
  • Give yourself plenty of time. The 2026 Gilman application deadline is March 5—start early so you can revise, proofread, and submit your strongest possible application.
  • Get feedback and ask questions. Ask a mentor, professor, or your study abroad office to take a second look at your application essays. Everybody wants to see you succeed and a second (or third) pair of eyes can make a real difference.
