Participating in the Yanguanzhai field school program in Xi’an, China was a transformative experience that reshaped my perspective on my major, Asian & Asian American Studies, and profoundly influenced my future aspirations. As someone who has always been passionate about understanding the cultural, historical, and social dynamics of Asia and its diasporic communities, this trip offered me a rare and immersive opportunity to deepen my knowledge and broaden my worldview.

This trip marked my first time visiting China, and it was a lifelong dream fulfilled. Being in the country that serves as the foundation for so much of what I studied brought my academic learning to life in ways I could not have anticipated. The program allowed me to engage directly with the rich history of Xi’an through hands-on archaeological work.
Excavating at the Yanguanzhai site and uncovering artifacts such as calcium carbonate deposits, pig bones, and ceramics provided tangible connections to ancient lives and stories. These discoveries not only enhanced my understanding of the region’s historical context but also deepened my appreciation for the intricate ways that culture and history are preserved and interpreted.

One of the most profound realizations I had during the trip was how much of modern China felt deeply familiar. The vibrant markets, bustling streets, and communal atmosphere reminded me of the Chinese diasporic communities in my hometown of San Francisco. These parallels illuminated the intricate ties between China and its global diaspora, underscoring how migration and cultural exchange have shaped the places I call home. It made me reflect on how the cultural fabric of my city has been profoundly influenced by Chinese immigrants and their descendants, and how much these communities have contributed to my personal sense of identity and belonging.

This field school experience also widened my perception of the vast range and depth of possibilities in life. Being immersed in an environment so different from what I’d known challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace new perspectives. It reinforced the importance of education as a tool for breaking barriers and building connections across cultures. Inspired by this realization, I’ve become more committed to pursuing educational access through creative mediums like film or documentary. These platforms have the power to make learning more accessible, engaging, and inclusive, reaching audiences who might otherwise lack access to such opportunities.
I left Xi’an not only with a greater understanding of Chinese history and culture but also with a renewed sense of purpose. This experience reaffirmed my commitment to using my education and creativity to bridge gaps and foster understanding between communities. Whether through storytelling, visual media, or other forms of engagement, I aim to contribute to expanding educational access and cultivating cross-cultural appreciation. Participating in this unique program was a privilege, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to grow both personally and academically. The lessons I learned in Xi’an will undoubtedly guide me as I continue to explore ways to make education and cultural exchange more dynamic and impactful.
