About the Program

The archaeology of the American Southwest is a particularly powerful, historic, landscape-based archive that contains a wide array of information. The vast majority of archaeological research there is focused on settlements and material culture created by the indigenous groups from the region. However, most of the researchers working on this material are not Native American. There are many reasons for this, but one of the primary explanations is that the discipline of archaeology has often failed to make room for new perspectives and diverse life histories. The goal of this scholarship is to help introduce indigenous students to public methods of archaeological practice and to acquaint them with the shifting currents of archaeological research by funding one student’s participation in the Gallina Landscapes of History field school through IFR. The student will also gain valuable college credit, excavation and survey experience, along with participating in outreach events and learning about how to craft engaging stories for the general public.
